Overpass is dedicated to making sure our online marketplace features only the highest-quality freelance contractors. Part of this effort is a tailored Contractor Assessment, which every contractor on our platform must complete prior to their approval.

Assessment Goals & Development

The primary purpose of the Contractor Assessment is for Overpass to better understand the respective strengths and personality traits of each contractor -- particularly those traits which are associated with strong sales ability. This understanding ultimately allows us to suggest better pairings between contractors and clients.

This test was created through a partnership between the Overpass Talent team and a professional consultant -- a PhD-trained, industrial-organizational psychologist with 15 years of experience in talent assessment.

Understanding the Onboarding Process

Completing the Contractor Assessment is the third of four required steps in the overall onboarding process for new freelancers.

New applicants to the Overpass marketplace must first begin by creating a profile, listing all previous relevant phone sales experience.

Secondly, once their profile is complete, applicants will conduct a brief interview with a member of our Talent Advocate team, so that our team can get to know the freelancer, and better understand their background and goals.

Following this conversation, applicants will be asked to take the Contractor Assessment. The assessment takes around 15 minutes to complete, and contractors have two days to complete the assessment after their interview. Each contractor may only take the assessment once.

The fourth and final step in the onboarding process is for contractors to participate in one of our online training sessions. These sessions last 90 minutes, and are currently offered on two occasions every week: Tuesdays from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM, and Thursdays from 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (all times Eastern). Following this session, the contractor will be officially approved for the platform and can begin applying to jobs.

Taking the Test

During the assessment, contractors will be presented with a series of statements, and asked to choose whether they agree or disagree with each one.

For each question, contractors may choose one of five possible responses, ranging from Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree:

After making a selection, you will advance to the next question. There are 65 multiple questions in total, so most contractors will finish within 10-20 minutes.

What Are We Evaluating?

Each contractor is assessed in five dimensions: Determination, Resilience, Empathy, Dependability, and Communication. In each of these five areas, the contractor will receive a numeric score between 1 and 5.

These dimensions are defined as follows:

  • Determination: the capacity and tendency to be and remain committed to the products, customer, and job and to motivate oneself independent of others.

  • Resilience: the capacity to consistently rebound from adversity (e.g., disappointment, failures, rejection, and negative feedback) back to levels of normal functioning.

  • Empathy: the capacity to sense and understand the thoughts, perspectives, feelings, needs, and desires of others.

  • Dependability: the capacity to be reliable, accountable, and present when performing tasks and working with others.

  • Communication: the capacity to effectively communicate with both teammates and customers.

The average of these five scores provides the final assessment value, which will be displayed to clients on each contractor Profile page.
